While running errands around town today I heard a squirrel barking from an oak tree near the traffic light I was stopped at. A squirrel’s bark is usually issued when a predator is nearby. In this particular case the bark was issued because a Red-tailed Hawk was perched on a nearby phone pole. Red-tails are the number one avian predator of squirrels in this corner of the world. I iPhonescoped the one pictured below at Lake Lafayette Heritage Trail Park. My attention was drawn to it by…yes, a squirrel bark!
