Apalachicola National Forest is world renowned for many different reasons. I love the forest because it never ceases to show me something new and amazing every time I visit. Today’s visit produced this beautiful flower, parnassia grandifloria. It’s very rare and is, according to an online source, only found in 4 of Florida’s 67 counties. It was growing near an ephemeral pond, home to endangered salamanders. While taking pictures of the flower and surrounding landscape I could hear endangered Red-cockaded Woodpeckers in the distance. Apalachicola National Forest is amazing and I can’t wait until my next visit in a few days.
