American Bittern

St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge is my go to spot for this skulky winter visitor. An early morning walk around Stoney Bayou II usually produces at least one American Bittern. On very cold mornings, I’ll often see them out in the open. I have also had a lot of success seeing bitterns at Lake Apopka near Orlando and at Green Cay Wetlands in Palm Beach. They’ll be present throughout much of Florida until March and April.
