The first ever Yellow-billed Cuckoo I saw was 18 years ago on October 12 1999. It was on Tresco, one of the Isles of Scilly, which lie 20 odd miles off the south-west tip of England. In case you were wondering, Yellow-billed Cuckoos are very rare on the eastern side of the Atlantic Ocean. Probably fewer than 50 have ever been recorded over there. In Florida, they are quite common; I saw three this afternoon. Yellow-billed Cuckoos migrate to the United States in the spring, some stay to nest here in Florida, and then they leave our shores in the fall, choosing to spend the winter in South America.
