Brown-headed Nuthatch

Here’s a bird that you invariably hear before you see it. Rubber ducks! Yep, that’s what they sound like. They are quite common in the Tallahassee area, we even get them in our neighborhood on occasion. The one pictured below was at St. Joe Peninsula State Park, one of my favorite sites to see Brown-headed Nuthatches. They are very common in the park and often show very well. This one came close and was hanging out in a mixed songbird flock by the youth camp. If you’re looking for them closer to Tallahassee, try the Munson Sandhills. They’re easy to find there. Don’t forget to listen for rubber ducks calling from pine trees!
