Black Skimmer

Dad and I spent a few hours at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge yesterday evening to see what birds and wildlife we could find. Thunderstorms seemed to surround us during our visit but we were lucky I guess, as it only rained for a short while. The tide was coming in, so we drove down to the lighthouse and watched a mixed flock of birds bathing, preening and resting on the flats; Royal Terns, Laughing Gulls, Forster’s Terns, Willets, Short-billed Dowitchers, a single Gull-billed Tern and a bunch of Black Skimmers. The latter were very restless and barked their discontent as the rising water level eventually forced them to take flight and seek higher, drier ground.
