Lake Ella is Muscovy Duck “Central” in Tallahassee; there’s 20-30 pairs of this non-native duck at the lake. Muscovy Ducks are native to Central and South America. What are they doing here then? Well, they’re commonly kept as pets in the United States and over the years individuals have escaped their avian enclosures and ventured out into the wild. You can find small populations scattered around Florida, frequenting urban parks such as Lake Ella. During a recent visit to the lake I counted over 100 muscovies, which included at least 30 ducklings!
